How Do You Calculate an Influencer Engagement Rate?

Calculate follower-, reach- and view-based engagement rates with the right denominator, then report them transparently in a creator media kit.

Choose the purpose before calculating influencer engagement: for a public profile comparison, use interactions ÷ followers; for your own content performance, prefer interactions ÷ accounts reached, then multiply by 100. A view-based rate can be reported separately for video. There is no universal formula. Without the denominator, period, content format and included actions, an engagement-rate number is incomplete and potentially misleading.

Suppose a post receives 420 likes, 30 comments, 50 saves and 20 shares: 520 actions in total. If it reached 8,000 accounts, the reach-based rate is 520 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 6.5%. With 12,000 followers, the follower-based rate is 520 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = approximately 4.33%. Both calculations are valid; they answer different questions.

Select the rate that matches the decision

Do not send a brand only “my engagement rate is 6.5%.” Say, for example, “median reach-based engagement across the latest 12 organic Reels; likes, comments, saves and shares included.” Our influencer media kit guide helps package that evidence clearly.

Which actions belong in engagement?

Instagram Insights describes interactions as actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares. “Accounts engaged” is the number of unique accounts that interacted. Do not add those two measures together: 520 total actions and 410 unique engaging accounts describe different things.

A transparent post-level action set is usually:

Likes + comments + saves + shares

Story replies, link taps, exits and navigation; YouTube watch time, average percentage viewed and returning viewers; and TikTok play duration and completion behaviour answer other questions. Report them by format instead of forcing everything into a single interaction total.

For an e-commerce campaign, a link click or valid coupon use may sit closer to the business objective than a like. For a community objective, a specific comment, reply or share may matter more. Engagement rate does not replace campaign outcomes.

Follower-based rate, step by step

When reviewing the latest 12 organic posts:

  1. Record likes and comments for each post.
  2. If you have Insights, add saves and shares; otherwise disclose that they are unavailable.
  3. Divide each post's included interactions by the follower count at publication or measurement.
  4. Multiply by 100.
  5. Order the 12 rates and report the median plus the low-to-high range.

In a public review, saves and shares are normally unavailable. Label the result “public follower-based rate” and do not compare it in the same column with a complete owner-supplied Insights rate.

PostLikesCommentsFollowersPublic engagement rate
A4203012,000(450 ÷ 12,000) × 100 = 3.75%
B2802012,000(300 ÷ 12,000) × 100 = 2.50%
C6505012,000(700 ÷ 12,000) × 100 = 5.83%

The simple average is about 4.03%, while the median is 3.75%. In a longer series, one viral post can move the average much more, so the median often describes “typical” performance more honestly. Still report format, date and paid-support context.

Why reach can be a better denominator

Not every follower sees every post, and non-followers can discover it. A reach-based rate measures action density among the unique accounts that encountered the content on screen. That makes it useful for evaluating your own publication.

Meta explains that accounts reached is an estimated number of unique accounts that saw content at least once, while views can include repeats. A Reel can therefore have different reach- and view-based rates. When sharing an Insights screenshot, keep the date range, metric name and organic/paid status visible.

Example:

  • Total actions: 900
  • Accounts reached: 15,000
  • Reach-based rate: 900 ÷ 15,000 × 100 = 6%
  • View-based rate: 900 ÷ 24,000 × 100 = 3.75%

The difference is not evidence of manipulation; views may repeat. The misleading act would be to publish the higher figure as “the engagement rate” without naming its denominator.

TikTok and YouTube need wider context

TikTok Studio provides views, likes, shares and other post-performance data. TikTok's Creator Rewards approach also highlights originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement. A high like rate alone therefore does not guarantee distribution or revenue.

YouTube's Engagement analytics foreground watch time, average view duration and audience-retention moments. Five hundred likes may appear low on a long video, but viewers who watch deeply, continue to another video and return can represent stronger channel health. Do not force a YouTube long video and an Instagram photo into one formula.

Clean the comparison set

Use 12–20 comparable organic posts. Mark separately or remove from the primary median and show in an additional row:

  • Paid or boosted posts,
  • Giveaways and heavily incentivised actions,
  • Pinned posts that have accumulated reach for an unusual period,
  • Viral posts outside the normal niche,
  • Collaboration posts with distribution from another account,
  • New-format experiments,
  • Data limitations such as hidden likes or deleted comments.

The purpose is not to hide weak performance. It is to avoid mixing different distribution conditions. For a campaign review, place sponsored content next to comparable organic content.

Sample comments manually for real questions, experiences, objections and subject-specific replies. Repetitive, irrelevant comments from the same accounts can produce a high but weak rate. Our fake follower and engagement quality guide provides a deeper audit.

Media kit checklist

  • The denominator—followers, reach, views or unique accounts—is named.
  • Included actions are listed.
  • Date range and sample size appear.
  • Use of median rather than average is explained.
  • Organic, boosted, giveaway and collaboration posts are separated.
  • Platforms and formats are not merged into one rate.
  • Insights screenshots retain dates and metric names.
  • Follower count is recorded for the measurement date.
  • No bought or artificially incentivised interaction is included.
  • The rate is not presented as a sales guarantee.

Choosing a denominator solely to exaggerate performance, presenting paid traffic as organic or hiding purchased engagement can mislead a brand. When sharing screenshots, do not unnecessarily expose viewer usernames, messages, email addresses or other personal information. Preserve the advertising disclosure on sponsored content; our August 2026 influencer ad-label guide explains the current Turkish requirement. This guide does not imply that every platform has one official universal rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good influencer engagement rate?

There is no single “good” rate for every platform, format, niche and account size. Compare the median and interaction quality of your own latest 12–20 similar posts.

Is likes plus comments divided by followers enough?

It works for a public first-pass comparison, but misses saves, shares and actual reach. Label it clearly as a public follower-based rate.

Should reach or views be the denominator?

Use reach for actions per unique account and views for actions per video play. You may report both, but name each one and explain repeat views.
