Measure influencer campaigns: links, codes and the limits of attribution

Make a measurement plan for creator campaigns and distinguish measurable orders from attribution gaps.

A creator video can generate demand without every order coming through the supplied link. Someone counting only a code therefore sees one part of the picture. A useful campaign report shows what was captured, what is missing and what decision can still be made.

Set a measurement question before launch

Choose a primary objective and period. For a product launch, the question might be: “Which content brings qualified visits to our product page?” For a sales promotion, another question might matter more: “Which attributable orders arose during the promotion?” Reach, visits and orders are different stages; do not add them as if they were the same result.

Also record costs: creator fee, production, shipping and any media budget. A complete cost list is a prerequisite for meaningful economic assessment. Mark missing figures as missing rather than estimating them to create a more attractive metric.

A separate link for each creator and format can help distinguish visits. Google Analytics documentation explains how utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign carry campaign information. Agree a simple, consistent naming convention; personal data does not belong in URL parameters.

An example test link is https://beispiel.de/produkt?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=creator&utm_campaign=herbsttest&utm_content=creator_a. This is an illustrative pattern, not a real campaign link. A discount code can provide another trace. The same order can appear through both link and code, however: check duplicate attribution before summing.

Privacy and consent requirements depend on the actual technology and legal basis. The Datenschutzkonferenz explains that not every cookie use is assessed alike. Review the actual implementation with your privacy team.

An honest report in four lines

  • Activity: Which content was published and when?
  • Capture: Which links, codes and systems were actually available?
  • Result: Observed visits and clearly attributable orders, each with its period.
  • Limit: Uncaptured purchases, returns, missing consent or multiple contacts.

Hypothetical calculation: €1,200 in clearly attributed revenue and €400 in recorded campaign costs produce an observed revenue-to-cost ratio of 3.0. It is neither profit nor proof that the campaign caused all the revenue. Returns and other costs can change the result.

Is a discount code complete proof of success?

No. It captures only orders where the code was actually used and correctly recorded.

What if revenue data is missing?

Report available signals and the data gap. Do not report ROAS without reliable revenue and costs.
