How local brands can check audience fit, content and collaboration before booking creators for a German campaign.
For a business in Cologne, the account with the largest reach in Germany is not automatically the best choice. What matters is whether people in the relevant catchment area see the content, whether the format answers a specific question, and whether the creator can deliver reliably. A small test makes these assumptions testable before a brand agrees to a longer package.
From business goal to suitable brief
First define an observable objective. A bakery might want new visitors at a specific location; an online shop might want to answer questions about shipping or using a product. Set the location, period, audience, specific deliverable and available budget. Leave room for the creator's own voice: a conversation in a shop needs different creative freedom from a product video for the brand's channel.
Distinguish two assignments: a creator post reaches the creator's community. With UGC, the creator produces material the brand can use itself within the agreed scope. Reach and production should therefore be requested and paid for separately.
Five checks for a shortlist
- Region: Ask for recent, voluntarily supplied, appropriately aggregated audience-location insights. A profile location does not prove where the audience lives.
- Topic: Review several recent posts. Does the account answer questions relevant to your offer?
- Format: Check audio, clarity, captions and whether the creator can show a product or place understandably.
- Collaboration: Agree availability, correction rounds, production location and who approves the material.
- Transparency: Agree advertising identification in advance. The Medienanstalten provide a matrix for different online formats.
A scorecard can give each category zero to two points. The result supports a decision; it does not prove that every account represents a real person. Unusual comments or reach patterns should prompt questions; manipulation cannot be established from a single metric.
Make the first test comparable
Give two selected people the same assignment and comparable conditions. Before publication, record the period to be assessed and what information the brand will actually receive. For a shop campaign, a dedicated message or voluntarily used code can provide an indication; it will not capture every visit. Compare observed results and measurement gaps side by side.
Example brief: “Show in a short video what a visit to us looks like. Filming takes place in our Cologne shop. Please suggest an outline and date. We will agree usage and advertising identification in writing before production.” The example promises neither a particular reach nor sales result.
How do I know whether a creator fits the region?
Ask for aggregated audience insights and assess fit using the content. A location in the profile alone is not enough.
Is a large follower count required?
No. Suitability depends on the goal, relevant audience, format and agreed scope.
